The storm could become a hurricane by Friday, the center said.
The storm poses no threat to land in the next five days, and there are no coastal watches or warnings related to the storm from the National Hurricane Center.
Now in the eastern Atlantic, Earl has winds near 40 mph (65 kph), the center said.
Earl is the fifth tropical storm in the Atlantic basin for the 2010 season.
Earlier Wednesday, former Tropical Storm Frank intensified into a hurricane as it moved out from Mexico into the Pacific Ocean.
The storm is blamed for four deaths and has affected at least 30,000 residents in southern Mexico, the government-run Notimex news agency said.
